Processing of foods

To understand better what is processing of food, degrees of processing and why do we need to process foods.we were given an article to read in groups. Each group read and understood the matter and then presented the same in a form of a poster.

We watched videos to understand the different process of packaged foods.

To be able to experience some parts of the journey of food and the processes they go through to reach our tables we worked on a project - "market to table"

We started by thinking about one food item that we would like to make.
Name
Food item
Prisha
Sandwich
Dhyey
Chocolate milkshake
Naira
Chaas
Drishti
Salad
Vivaan
Mango milkshake
Meeshaa
jelly
Isha
Apple juice
Jainam
Chocolate
Sadaf
lime juice
Swaraj
Ice lolly

Bringing in our instructional writing, we wrote the recipes for the food item.
Creating posters of the recipe.

We set out to the markets ourselves to buy the ingredients we would be needing.
This helped us understand change in  money better. We paid and exchanged the exact change that we would need to pay the exact bill.

One by one all of us made the recipes our friends wrote to make the food item. We measured, weighed, followed instructions.......all without knowing we were actually doing all of these things!!!

We discussed the processes each raw material went through before we could eat the food item.

This week we began working on our summative task.  Stay tuned to know what our task is....

In Math, we have been learning about different denominations in the Indian currency.
We have been exploring how to make a certain amount using different combinations of notes and coins.

Playing Who wants to be a millionaire

Next week we are working on setting up a tuck shop. We are working on making things to sell in the tuckshop. As a class we have brainstormed ways in which we can ear money to buy things from the tuck shop.
Coming up more on this next week.

What is the system that gets food from farm to table?

This week we have been looking at the big idea of the farm to table system.
We learnt that the system is made of interacting parts that create the "whole." Transporting, processing, and packaging are subsystems of the larger food system.

Researching to find out the process different product go through from raw material to finished goods

Presenting our finding to the class in the form of a flow chart

Stay tuned to see how we take our inquiry further .....

Working on writing instructions on how to make strawberry jelly.

We worked on modifying the game of snakes and ladders to include the concept of multiplication and division in it.
Writing the instructions for our modified game of snakes and ladders.

In Math, this week we had to face the 10-10-10-10 challenge. We tried to create an interesting object with four different materials weighing exactly the same weight.
Trying different permutations and combinations to get it just right. Some of us succeeded .... while some of us are still trying.

We also began learning about money. We began with exchanging things with each other. Soon we  realized that the exchange was  unfair and didn't have things that we wanted in exchange for.  This helped us to understand why the barter system was redundant and the need to develop other systems of exchange.

We went on to research about the items used as money in the past and discussed why they were not used now. This discussion led us to see why the system of money was invented.

Isha and Sadaf brought their pets from home and taught our little friends from play group and nursery about how to take care of pets

As part of our instructional writing, we made small tokens for our moms to express what we felt for them.

Making a folding candy stick card

Putting together a booklet of 52 reasons why we love our moms!!

Our moms reactions to our gifts :-)

Where does the food come from?

Our week began with a trip to the food hall. We went around the mall and made noted of the different places our food comes from. We noticed that the food was from all over the world and not just from Mumbai.

We came back and shared our findings with our friends. We decided to map out the places our food came from.

Preparing the map

Locating and mapping the places

We watched a video to understand that there are several steps that food gores through before it reaches us.

Learning about the  same through games online

We brainstormed different raw materials and food products

We divided ourselves in groups to research the process  - Raw material to final product.
Stay tuned to see what we do next.

To understand field to table we followed instructions on how to grow coriander. We planted our own coriander plant.

Watering it daily and caring to it to watch our coriander grow from seed to plant.

Trying to put the jumbled up instructions on how to make jelly in the right order.

In Math, we have been exploring the concept of weight. We began with inquiring into the question - How good are our senses in comparing the weight of objects.

We used the pan balance to see if our estimations using our senses were accurate.

We tried our hands at building our own balances by following instructions.

Working with some sums on weight

We have been working on understanding the importance of giving due credit when using other peoples work through the common sense media.

Working on our missions to complete our digital passports

Our class seems to be growing quickly. We had another friend join us this week. Welcome to our team Ahan!!!
