Going further

We continued our inquiry into our UOI, by inquiring into the different reasons conflicts arise.
To understand that different ideas and perspectives reflect beliefs and values we invited a few guest speakers to our class.

We brought things from home that represented the beliefs we have

To understand what the different values mean we played a game - Find your partner. We had to try and match the value we had to what it meant bu going around and reading the descriptions on our friends backs.

We gathered back and reflected if we had found the right matches.

Once we understood the different values and how one displays them we created our own value shields

Every coin has two sides

An  out of the box thinking activity helped us understand perspective in a fun and creative way

10% of conflicts is due to difference of opinion and 90%  is due to wrong tone of voice
(Source unknown)

To further understand the different reasons of conflict we picked looked into different stories.
  We worked in groups and.....
        - identified the conflicted in them
- the reason the conflict arose
                   - possible solutions to resolve the conflict

Silent Sutained Reading

Our class word wall
Learning new words is a goal we are working towards in our classroom. The word wall is helping us keep track of the words we are learning.

Writing workshops
We began our writing journey with the story - The best story by Eileen Spinelli.
The story helped us understand that the best stories are the ones that are written about things that are important to us.

Things I can write about
Brainstorming things that I can write about... for the times when we get stuck on ideas about what to write

We moved on to understanding the different stages of a writing process

Personal narratives
We heard the story 'The Leaving morning' by Angela Johnson. We learnt that one way to write a really good personal narrative is to think about times in our lives when we felt a very strong
emotion

Small moments
Looking back on the same story we learnt how to narrow down our topics and write about small important moments in our lives (inspired from pinterest)

Planning our narratives
We moved on to plan out that small moment that we felt very strongly about emotionally

Writing  a strong beginning
Moving on to the next stage of the writing process, we began out first drafts.
We re-read the leaving morning and focused on understanding how the writer had hooked the reader from the beginning. We explored a few ways to write some engaging beginnings.

Using time words
We learnt how time words can help connect our beginning middle and end and they help the reader understand exactly when things happen in the story.

Describing actions step by step
We are learning how to add details by describing step by step action of the characters in our story
Stay tuned to know more about our writers' journey......

Place Value
The story of Zero showed us how adding a zero can change the value of a number

Exploring the values of different numbers through manipulative

Exploring adding and subtracting multiples of 10's

Place value poster project
We worked on our place value assessment by creating a poster (inspired from pinterest) that helped us show our understanding of the concepts we have been exploring. It was challenging and fun!

Learning through technology
Khan Academy
We set up our account on Khan academy. We began with watching videos to help us understand place value better. We took up different mission and assignments to master the different pre math skills.

Class Dojo
Dojo helps us build a more positive classroom community. It puts on us the responsibility of making the right choice. It makes us STOP , THINK and make the RIGHT CHOICE.

Seesaw - Our Learning Journal
This year we are working on creating our digital portfolio. We have chosen to the same through Seesaw.

To understand what a journal is we brainstormed things could be added to a journal

Once we were clearer what a learning journal means we got busy setting up our accounts. learning to sign in, putting up our first post.

Assembly time
We have been enjoying and learning a lot from our assemblies every Wednesday.

Our friends from Grade 4 shared their learning with us through a treasure hunt. They showed us how explorers set out on their journey to discover new places.

Our friends from Grade 1 showed us how we can make healthy choices to lead a fitter and better life.

Our first class assembly of the year
Along with our friends from Grade 2, we put together an assembly on the theme of perspectives. We shared what a conflict means and how we can resolve them. Through the think out of the box activity we encouraged our friends to think differently . This is turn showed them how the same thing can be though of in so many different perspectives.

Our new academic year begins......

Welcome to the new academic year 2016-17. We are very excited and roaring with energy to know our new class systems. We are looking forward to learn, grow and explore new things in Grade 3 with our friends.

Getting to know games
The first week we played some games to get to know each other better

Looking back on our Summer
We reflected on a few special moments of our summer holidays

Essential agreements
Every year we start our year by creating our 'essential agreements". In the classroom, it means that, rather than the teacher imposing rules everyone works collaboratively to come up with an agreement of how the class will function. We came up with our list of agreements too.
We went on to create memes to display our agreements. We started looking for pictures that would represent what we had in mind......though of captions to go with the pictures and finally put them together to create our essential agreements memes.

We learnt how to print a document

Collected our prints and then set to work on creating our bulletin board.

Number line
Through the exercise of creating a number line we reviewed odd and even numbers, counting by 5's and 10's

B.U.I.L.D. time
We have our BUILD time to work on our math concepts.

Addition Strategy Mat
We have been working on learning different strategies that will help us to calculate faster and more effectively.

Silent Reading time

Word work
We brainstormed different question words and exclamatory words

Learning to use the dictionary

 Stretch -a- sentence

We have been working on learning how to add details to a sentence.

Who we are
We began our first Unit of inquiry under the theme - Who we are.

Tuning in ....

The new unit began with us watching the story - The Zax by Dr Seuss. We got into pairs and came up with how the problem of the Zax could be solved.

Graffiti board
We walked around the class and wrote our views about the different statements written on the sheets.

Problems arise because….

I get angry when……

When my feelings are hurt I …...

We know we have done something wrong when……

Bundling
The students sorted a mix of words into groups as per their opinion

Feelings
We explored what feelings do different colors bring out in us

We explored different feelings that we all feel. We noticed that in a given situation many of us felt different things.

Think out of the box
We looked at the same shape and made what it appeared to us as

Team building game
We played team building games to understand how communication is extremely important for a group to be successful

Visual representation
We drew about one relationship we valued, one responsibility we shared, favorite festival and what helps us become better persons. Through this activity we unfolded the theme who we are.

Assembly time
Our first assembly of this year was full of fun and frolic. We played games at different stations and mingled with old and new friends, getting to know each other.

Our friends from Grade 5 shared with us what they had been doing over the past few days in their classroom. Thank you Mr. Gregory and Grade 5 for the lovely assembly.

Summing up the unit and the academic year

The last two weeks we have been working on our summative task.
Our task - Design a board game to show the journey food takes to reach our tables. Along with the journey we were also required to include any two math concepts we had covered through the year......and of course as part of the  language integration we had to write the instructions/rules for the designed board game.

We began with researching about the journey of the food, planning and designing the game, writing the instructions .....

Putting together the game and required parts

Finally the board games were ready to be played....

We took time to reflect on our past year and put in our thoughts through a letter for the upcoming third graders.

In Math, we have been working on putting together a tuck shop as part of our assessment on money.
As a class we came up with chores and ways that can help us earn money to buy things from the tuck shop.

After a week of earning money, finally it was time to buy things from the class  'Tuck shop'
What a fun way to learn how to add, subtract and budget your money.

PYP dance and PE assembly

In our final assembly of the year we bid goodbye to all the departing teachers.

A short glimpse into some of the performances -

We hosted some students from the french school to participate in the 'Francophone' . It was an amazing experience for our french students.Thank you Ms. Patricia and Ms. Clemence for organizing such an exciting event.

As part of their unit, Grade 5 organised a carnival. It was superrrrrr fun!
Thank you Ms. Cecilia and Grade 5 for inviting us to be a part of the carnival.

To collect some lovely memories, we  each wrote things about our class mates. Everyone collected their strip from each other and put them together to make a lovely frame as a keepsake of the year.

We finally earned our Digital passport certificate and our poem books!!!

A short movie to showcase some moments of the awesome journey of the past year.
Will miss each and everyone of you. All the best for all your future endeavors.
