How the world works!!!!

This week we began our 5th Unit of Inquiry under the theme - How the World Works. We are going to be investigating about - 'The design of buildings and structures is dependent upon environmental factors, human ingenuity, and available materials.'

We began the unit with a provocation:

We came to class and found a HUGE pile of different construction materials in the room- cardboard, newspaper, boxes, sticky tape, glue, plastic wrap, play dough, chopsticks, tooth picks, foam, toilet rolls, fabric, string, etc.-

We went crazy with them and let our creative juices flow to make something out of the waste.

At each step we kept reflecting on the process we were going through while building.
Once we were done we sat back and looked at all our reflections and tried to put them in groups.

We realized that these were things that architects did. We decided to brainstorm on what materials architects use and how.

We decided to put our structures to test. we tested to see if they could withstand ....air, weight and water.

Take a look at what happened -

Taking into consideration all that we had been doing over the past days we tried to guess what our new UOI is going to be about.

It was time to unfold the central idea. We looked at the central idea and looked up the dictionary for words we didn't know about.

We went for a walk outside to see what were the materials available to build buildings and structures around us.

We came back and made a collage from magazines and newspapers and looked at the properties of these materials.

We then put our thoughts and wondering on a See/Think/Wonder chart

"What I THINK I know/what I WANT to know/HOW I can find out/what I LEARNED"

In Language, we are looking at elements of a story.

This week we celebrated Dr Seuss's birthday. We read several of his books and researched a few facts about him.

This week we also had a fun assembly by Grades 1 and 5 who made a few of the characters  from the world of Dr Seuss come alive.Thank you Ms. Ceclia and Ms. Jessica for helping them put together such an informative assembly.

In  Math, we are learning about measurement. We began by learning about non standardized units of measurement.

We also learnt about standardized units of measurements like centimeter, meter and kilometer.

What a colorful way to end the week.
Thank you Grade 1 and Ms. Jessica for arranging this celebration for all of us. We thoroughly enjoyed it.

 HAPPY HOLI TO EVERYONE!!!!

Ad blitz

What an adful week!!!

We have been learning about media and advertising. To give learning more meaning we were given a task to design and advertisement. We chose to advertise the school for the coming year.

A look into the journey we took to design these ads.
We began with understanding different forms of mediums in advertising and looking at different forms of advertisements.

After a thorough understanding of the same we looked at different ads in the newspaper. (print ads)

Post a discussion about what components should go in the advertisement we sat in our groups and began with designing our ad layouts.

Some of the layouts we designed.....

Once the layouts were ready with the help of our teacher we put our plans into shape using Word.

Finally our advertisements were ready to be printed.

Take a look......

Once they were printed it was time to display them around.

A big Thank you to Ms. Delnaz for guiding us  through this process of ad making.

Talking die
Through this game we reviewed all the different techniques that are used by advertisers.

Along with designing ads for the school we were busy designing a scrap book on our trip to Nilshi.
We put in our pre trip and post trip reflections and captured our memories in the scrap book.

Here is a sneak peek at our scrap book -

This week we also took time to think about the learner profile "Thinker."

In Math, we continued to work on fractions.

Outbound Influx

WHAT AN ADVENTURE!!!!!

Adventuresome.....gutsy....lion hearted.....fearless.....adventurous......daredevils.....daring.....on the move......traveling......hiking.....joyous.....blissful.....walking on cloud nine.....considerate......are some of the words that begin to describe the last week.

Morning of 9th of February, students of Grades 3,4 & 5 were fired up to set off for the four day camp to YMCA camp at Nilshi.

After a 5 hour journey we were still high on energy!!!!

We met Andre sir, who explained us the about the do's and don'ts of being safe.

As soon as we settled in, off we went to play 'Patax'. Through this game we learnt to be quick.....alert and work as a team.

Our well mannered students went wild with the 'Wild berries.'

Race to the trampoline.......

Trampoline time....

Next, our campers got a lesson on how to tie knots that help when trekking outside.

Just before dinner, we decided to go for a night trek out on the camp site.

Exhausted but full of zest, we retired to our cabin for a well deserved rest.

The next morning, Eduites were given a mission to 'Save the World.'
This mission helped us become more observant, self controlled, quick, alert and most important a good listener.

After saving the world, it was time to learn some archery.

Watch the young archers in action -

After a session of archery off we headed to the lake to cool off. We did some rafting and then took a dip in the lake.

At night, we set up the barbecue and roasted some corn and marshmallows.

End of day two

As the sun for the 3rd day rose, our Eduietes rose for an early morning trek.

The trek couldn't take the steam out of  us. We were all ready to try our hands at rock climbing and some tent pitching.

It was time to put out culinary skills to test.
BHEL TIME!!!

We played a game of shapes. This simple game of shapes helped us shape our visual thinking, abstract thinking, team building and the most important of all our PATIENCE levels.

Next we played a game - "Minefiled"
This game helped us focus on our listening and speaking skills. The most important thing it taught us was trusting our team members and their directions.

Our last night, was as eventful and fun as all the other times. We had a campfire around which we played, danced, sang and mimicked our teachers.

We lit 'wish lanterns' and am sure most of us wished the camp would not end here!!!!!

Before we started our return journey we packed and returned all the things lent to us.

A few special moments....

Peeling garlic for the barbecue

Washing our own plates and spoons

As all good things come to end, it was time for us to come back home.
On the way back.....

A big Thank you to Ms.. Cecilia and Ms. Disha for helping capture these lovely moments.
