How we organise ourselves

We began our week with a team game. We were given a ring tied with four strings. Our team of 4 had to carry the ball on the ring from one end of the ground to the other end.

Phew! It is not as easy as it sounds.....
Take a look at how we fared....

Post the game, we came back to class and reflected on our performance. We penned our thoughts down and then shared our thoughts with our friends. Together we identified the key words that helped us achieve our tasks successfully.

The story of the hare and the tortoise has a lot to teach us.

This is what we took away from the story....

The next day, when we entered class and found these disassembled things on our tables, our curious minds set to work to put them together. We soon realized that they are not working as they should. The torch didn't have the battery and the spring pen didn't have the spring. When we found the missing parts and put it together we realized how important every part was in order for things to work.

We reflected on this activity and this is what we thought......

We brainstormed where we had seen teams working together. From that we identified what are the workplaces of these teams.

Lastly, we sat with our friends and tried to come up with a statement that showed what they thought they would be learning over the next five weeks.

The key words that they were given were....group members, share, work together, workplace, towards, common task.

In the story 'The Hare and the Tortoise', we came across a  new word ...'trundled'. We looked it up in the dictionary and learnt that it means to move and roll slowly.

Taking our learning forward we read a poem  - Walking woes.

http://www.instantdisplay.co.uk/walkedpoem.jpg

We identified all the synonyms of walk from the poem and added the new words to our synonyms word wall.
We also identified that this was a rhyming poem. We identified that the last word of every other sentence sounded the same.

Soon, we got engrossed in searching for synonyms of walk. We came up with quite a few words and added them to our synonym wall.

In Math , we are exploring 2D shapes. We began by making a robot with the given shapes cutouts and then identifying which ones we already knew.

We went on to learn the names of the different shapes.

This week Grades 1 and 5 shared their learning of their previous units with us. It was truly amazing to see how they had learnt about self history and the history of others. They explained to us how a persons life changes when faced with risks, challenges and opportunities. Thank you Ms Jessica and Ms, Cecilia for inviting us for the lovely exhibition . Grades 1 and 5 awesome show !!!!!

Summative week!!

This week we wrapped our second UOI. We worked on the sumamtive Tic Tac Toe.

Creating an imaginary plant/animal.

We had to create an imaginary plant/animal..... name it, think what will be their needs, their food habits, where in the food chain are they found, their habitat, their adaptation skills.

Cool clicks!!

We had to find a Cool Click video that we like and share 3 survival facts about the chosen animal.

We took time to reflect on which learner profiles we had developed through this unit of inquiry.

In Math, we are learning about equal distribution and equal grouping in division.

This week we had the PYP music assembly. Thank you to all the parents for coming and encouraging us. This musical morning could not have been possible without Ms. Amanda. Thank you for honing our musical skills .....we truly enjoy music class!!

A sneak peek into two of the many super performances.

Count on me sung by grades 3, 4, & 5

Touch the sky from the movie Brave sung by grades 1-5.

And last but not the least.......

We celebrated children's day with our grade 1 & 5 friends. We had loads of fun making our own totems, clay magnets and turtle cups. Thank you Ms. Cecilia and Ms. Jessica for helping us make this special day so memorable.

Week 13

This week we have been busy learning about food chains and food webs. We saw videos and read books to understand a food chain. We then saw how a single food chain can get complex with other food chains joining in to make it a food web.

We compared a food chain and a food web using a Venn diagram.

We researched and wrote a report on one animal of our choice.

In Math,we are beginning to understand multiplication as repeated addition and arrays.

B.U.I.L.D. time

As we near the end of our second UOI , we have began working on our summative tasks. We were given a tic tac toe of 9 activities of which we had to choose any three.

We have began working on our first task.

Welcome back!

This week we researched and understood more deeply the different ways the animals and plants adapt.

We discovered that body adaptations are not the only way that plants and animals adapt. They also change their behavior and habits in order to survive in their environment.

We learnt that -

Hibernation is a special kind of deep sleep.

Migration is when animals move to another place in search of food or warm places.

In Language, we continued to further understand what are the key features of report writing.

We used this understanding to research and write our first report on Trex and the Stegasauraus.

S.P.E.L.L. time

In Math, we reviewed bar graphs, frequency tables and learnt about pictographs.

Happy Diwali!!!

We began this week by brainstorming the different animals we knew. We then got on to the internet and searched the map to find out where some of these were majorly found.

We started researching and learning about the different adaptations that animals make in order to survive in their environment. We are finding it very intriguing to learn the different ways the animals are built in order to be able to live in their surroundings.

In Math, we are learning to interpret graphs and create bar graphs. We now know that a bar graph is a graph drawn using rectangular bars to show how large each value is. The bars can be horizontal or vertical.

To understand better how plants adapt we conducted a potato experiment. We placed a potato in a dark box with just a tiny hole in one corner. We want to find out of this potato will grow, die or adapt.

Stay tuned to find out the results of the experiment.

We went around to the grade 4 and 5 students to see what they thought would happen . We collected their opinions and made a tally chart. We used this data collected to make a bar graph.

To celebrate Diwali, we worked hard to put together a small celebration for our helping staff without which our school days would not be as smooth and clean as there are. This is our way of saying a big THANK YOU to our entire helping staff for working way before we come and long after we are gone from school to make sure everything is organised for us, to have a lovely day at school.

Thank you Ms. Amanda for helping us put together this lovely sing and dance performance.

The second  song was composed by us!!!

Our french students singing a song in French for the staff on the occasion of Diwali célébration...

And last but not least, wishing everyone a safe and HAPPY DIWALI!!!!

Sharing the Planet

After a looooong 5 day weekend, it was time to get back to work.
We began our second unit of inquiry this week. Our new unit is under the theme - Sharing the Planet.
When we came back we found the chairs in our class missing and that made us think of what action we need to take now, as class has to go on and we can't stand the whole day. So our young thinkers put on their thinking caps and came up with different suggestions. We thought of having our class out in the open on the playground. Soon, we released that it was too big an open space and we all had to shout to be heard. The other classes were having PE class there and that distracted us too, besides the dragon flies and the scorching heat.

So it was time to think of another place! We came up with the idea of using the cafeteria. So off we went to the cafeteria.  Well there we met with another set of problems. Our voices echoed there and we didn't have pencils or colors to draw and color with!!

This did not deter our thinkers. They found some coal, beetroot, flowers, turmeric and mud and got set to work.

Post this activity we came back to class and reflected on the experience we had just had. We concluded that the changes in our environment forces us to do things differently and we had to ADJUST.

The next day we discussed and brainstormed what it means to be living.

We made a list of all the living things we could think off  and then bundled them in groups.
We realized that different animals have different habitats.

We worked at different stations to explore what are the different ways animals adapt in their
         surroundings.

Finally we unfolded our central idea and rewrote them to show our understanding of the same.

                                                        We heard the story -

http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51RX-3Lr4aL._SX258_BO1,204,203,200_.jpg

We reflected and thought of which animal teeth would we like to have, if given a choice.

We learnt how to write a super sentence.  This will help us understand the benefits of using  descriptive words when writing a sentence.

This week we had S.P.E.L.L. introduced in our class.

    S - Silent reading
P - Phonic fun
                 E - Exploring with words
        L - Listening centre
L-  Let's write

Like B.U.I.L.D helps us strengthen our Math skills through S.P.E.L.L. we are looking to develop
our literacy skills.
